Knidos, home of
Aphrodite |
|
Day 2
After an early breakfast you will depart for
Knidos,
an ancient Carian city, to visit the remains of an amphitheater,
acropolis and temple, which housed the famous statue of Aphrodite.
Knidos was founded by the Dorian Greeks in the 7th century BC. Located
on a windswept headland, the city had one harbor on the Aegean and
another on the Mediterranean and was strategically located on shipping
routes between Egypt, Rhodes, Ephesus, the Greek homeland and other
cities around the Mediterranean. Since the winds change as you round
the peninsula, ships were obliged to wait for good winds before
continuing their journey. A temple to Aphrodite was built here, which
contained a spectacular 4th century statue of the goddess. In the late
afternoon you will sail onto
Palamutbükü
a quaint fishing village. Dinner and
overnight in
Palamutbükü.

Day 3
Leaving
Palamutbükü we will have stops for swimming and lunch in Kargi or
Inceburun and reach the harbor of Datça towards evening. Restaurants,
cafés, bars, carpet shops, gifts, leather and jewelry shops are open
till midnight. Datca has a magical quality and all who visit return
year after year. Dinner and overnight.
Day 4
We leave
Datça in the morning and give the first stop to swim by Aktur, then
lunch by Disliceada. Late in the afternoon, we arrive at Bencik, the bay
which meanders into the land at the narrowest point of the peninsula.
Leaving Bencik, there are a lot of lovely bays we can choose
for overnight. Dinner and overnight. |

View
on the Top of the Fort at Bozukkale |
|
Day 5
We arrive first in Bozukkale ancient Loryma,
at the tip of the Bozburun Peninsula where the ruins of the ancient
harbor and castle remain can only be reached by boat.
Although the Turkish name means "ruined castle", the castle on
a hill at the entrance to the port is in relatively good condition. A
Byzantine wreck from the 11th. century, carrying merchandise to the
eastern Mediterranean was founded here. The artifacts taken from the
wreck can now be seen in the Bodrum Museum. During the
summer months you can probably see the team of American and Turkish
archaeologists that are excavating a 9th century Byzantine shipwreck very
close to the little town of Selimiye Passing around Karaburun. On leaving the Gulf of Hisaronu we find hidden away in its own
exclusive inlet the town of Bozburun, famous as one of the
ship (gulet) building centers of Turkey. |

Marmaris |
|
Day 6
Morning
arrival to Ancient
Physicus, Marmaris,
was an important stage on the Anatolia-Rhodes-Egypt trade route. The
city's museum is placed in the 16th century citadel, built by Suleyman
the Magnificent. Pine forests cover the mountains which surround
Marmaris, the shore line being a white line of sand and rock which
separates green from blue. The beach areas sparkle providing visitors
with a perfect opportunity to dive, snorkel and swim in relaxing
conditions. The shopping district of Marmaris
abounds with colorful bazaars and markets. You can find Turkish carpets,
textiles and embroidery, leather, copper and brass wares, jewelry and
onyx carvings and the locally produced pine-scented honey is superb.
Overnight in Marmaris Marina.

Day 9
After breakfast Dalyan or ancient Kuanos is
your next port of call - and one of our favorite places! Dalyan
and Delikli Island lies right off the coast,
southeast of Ekincik. You will enjoy a change of pace when you anchor
at the island and take a smaller craft excursion into the
Dalyan
Delta. The Delta, with a long, golden sandy beach at its mouth, is a nature-conservation area and a refuge for sea turtles (Caretta Caretta)
and blue crabs. At a bend in the river, high on the cliff face above,
you can see the fascinating ancient harbor city of
Kaunos,
with its magnificent Lycian tombs carved into the rock.
There are so many fascinating things to do here. You can explore the
ancient city of Kuanos, with it's interesting ruins, tombs and
incredible views form the top of the fortress. Look for turtles - Caretta
Caretta - the Mediterranean Loggerhead turtles - as you are boating
through the unique bamboo marshes of the river. Have a supurb lunch
of Blue Fin Crab or the local fish delicacy "Kefal" at one of the many fish restaurants along the river. And don't
miss the famous Thermal Mud Baths, that have muddied the likes of Dustin
Hoffman, Sting and many other celebrities. The captain will arrange a
water taxi with Mutlu (our driver) to take you to all these sights for about $200 for the day.

At certain times of the year, your captain may find it necessary
to move to an alternative mooring to avoid overly popular bays.
